Living with Peace

By Bob and Emilie Barnes

Living with Peace“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them” (Psalm 34:7).

Have you noticed that the promises of Scripture have a condition or requirement attached to them? In this particular promise, the requirement is that a person must fear the Lord. David the psalmist doesn’t say that everyone is going to be rescued by the Lord—only those who are obedient to God’s commands. This is a jewel of a statement and a promise. I find it very comforting to know that God has appointed an angel to look after my well-being.

As a child, did you ever build a clubhouse or a fort? Did you ever cover a table with a blanket and crawl inside to a safe, cozy nest? I did, and it was such a secure feeling. That’s what Psalm 34 reminds me of. The word encamps denotes making a camp or a fortress for protection. That’s what the Lord has done for each of us. David was a man on the run, not knowing if he would live or die. Each day he begged God for mercy. He petitioned for safety and the snug feeling of protection. Truly the Lord has given each of us our own special angel who wraps loving arms around us and delivers us from all harm.

I make it my practice to stand on the promise that no matter what happens, all’s well. God is keeping a close, protective watch on me. I continually feel His presence. He’s always near. Even when I feel I have moved away from Him, He will never forsake me. I am His child. During my darkest hours, I can be assured that He is overseeing my every situation. I see nonbelievers around me with lives driven by fear, who are unable to experience peace in their situation. Don’t wait much longer in life if you are living in fear rather than in the peace of faith.

Father God, You are my protector. You keep me safe when I need a shelter. When You are standing next to me, I feel so secure. Thanks for being my rock and foundation for life. Amen.
