Marriage Renewal

Married couples sometimes settle into monotonous routines despite their affection for each other. Daily duties consume energy and the dream of their wedding day can get foggy. But those who take the time to enjoy every day together will put life back into their relationship.

Several years ago, my husband and I attended a wedding where the minister encouraged the bride and groom to treat each other like queen and king. My husband squeezed my hand and I was grateful my husband treated me like a queen every day. He drove me to the supermarket when I was tired or the roads were slippery. He bathed the children while I cleaned the kitchen. He read them bedtime stories while I finished the laundry. He listened to my concerns and let me vent my feelings. He comforted me when I was sad. He surprised me with special gifts.

Likewise, he appreciated it when I would treat him like a king. I waited up for him after evening meetings so we could share quiet time together. I surprised him with special foods, new books, and other gifts. I suggested simple family outings, like picnics, instead of tedious trips after hard workweeks.

With “royal” respect for each other, our home became a palace. The recipe for a home blessed by God is found in Ephesians 5:33, “Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” With this priceless piece of advice, you can renew the joy and excitement in your marriage. Do you treat your husband like a king? Think of something you can do today to show him how much you care.
