The Encouragement of a Smile

I had never seen a lovelier morning. My heart overflowed with the joy of being alive and I couldn’t help but count my blessings.

I chose a shopping cart and trundled my way down the crowded aisles of the store. I noticed how downcast the other shoppers appeared. They seemed impatient, tense, bored. Everyone looked soul-weary and sad. I wanted to pass out hugs and make everyone feel better, but I decided the least I could do was give everyone a smile.

A smile is such a small thing, but it means so much. Everyone I saw received a smile and a greeting and I was amazed by the hesitant smiles I received in return. I hope I made their days brighter and they passed the smile along to someone else.

Everyone has worries and problems, and in our society, we try to deal with them alone. But God’s Word tells us to encourage each other and build one another up. It’s easy to do this when you pass along a smile.
