How would you like to work for the perfect employer? Every morning you would wake up and hurry to work—simply because you couldn’t wait to get started. Hard to imagine? For the past eight months, I’ve done exactly that. I’ve been working for God.
Many of us have held jobs where our employers expected us to learn things by osmosis. Our supervisors had neither the time nor ambition to train us, and were so busy with their own work they didn’t notice how much trouble we were having. Not so with the Lord. He gives us instruction every moment of the day.
A company manager may provide you with a handbook on general information, subject to change at any time without notice. But God’s instruction Book is complete and never needs to be updated.
Employers often want you to perform multiple tasks at once, working alone and picking up the slack when someone else makes a mistake. But God comes alongside us and helps us finish the work He called us to do.
Instead of giving us an endless list of tasks to complete, God give us one task only: obedience. If we simply obey Him, everything will be taken care of. True, obedience is a tall order, but we have His instruction Book to read and we know exactly what He expects. Deuteronomy 5:32 says, “Be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.” If I’m on the wrong path, He directs me to the right one.
Many people I know struggle to pay their bills and live from paycheck to paycheck. But if you work for the Lord, obeying His will for your life, He will supply your needs. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Some people become restless in their jobs because they are bored and don’t feel intellectually challenged. Not so when you work for God. Every day, your tasks vary. As you obey God, you live with a sense of expectation: What will God ask you to do today?
A key ingredient to a fulfilled life is knowing at the end of each day that you have made a difference. Working for God satisfies the need to be significant and changes our lives in ways we never dreamed possible. The greatest happiness in life is derived from serving God.
