The Value of Health

By Darla Knoth

"A woman's health is her capital," was the opinion of Harriet Beecher Stowe in the 1800s. From 1 Timothy 4:8—"For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things"—we know the apostle Paul considered bodily health secondary to spiritual health.

Thomas Jefferson considered health a high priority. He wrote, "With your talents and industry, with science, and that steadfast honesty which eternally pursues right, regardless of consequences, you may promise yourself every thing—but health, without which there is no happiness. An attention to health then should take place of every other object." Some might say he was being extreme, but Jefferson's statement makes us consider what a valuable asset health can be.

As women, we need to be attuned to our own health and the health of our families, as we are usually the main care providers. We are often solely responsible for decisions concerning the health and care of our children, husband, elderly parents and possibly other family members. Because of this responsibility, we should also be knowledgeable about that care, guarding the health of those around us, as much as we are able.
