Self-Image

Let’s talk about self image.

At the Pan American Games, champion United States diver Greg Louganis was asked how he coped with the stress of international diving competition. He replied that he climbs to the board, takes a deep breath, and thinks, “Even if I blow this dive, my mother will still love me.” Then he goes for excellence.

At the beginning of each day, how good it would be for each of us to take a deep breath, say, “Even if I blow it today, my God will still love me,” and then, assured of grace, go into the day seeking a perfect 10!

When Princess Diana of England died in a tragic car accident, the worldwide adulation poured out was akin to reverence for a fallen goddess. Indeed, Diana was the essence of what the media proclaim as the ideal: young, beautiful, rich and powerful. Yet all of Diana’s beauty, wealth and fame brought her neither peace nor true happiness.

Many women strive daily to meet the almost impossible standards the world sets. Others try to measure themselves by more traditional roles—submissive, gentle, hospitable and “busy at home.” But the real question is, what does the Bible really say about what a woman ought to be?

I love Dr. Deborah Newman’s book, A Woman’s Search for Worth. Look for the book in your Christian book store. It is published by Tyndale House. According to Dr. Newman, three areas must be explored in learning our true identity. First, we need to understand what makes us tick as women. Second, we need to identify the obstacles that prevent us from seeing what great women we are. And third, we need to develop a more intimate relationship with God.

When you grasp your true identity, stop condemning yourself and others, and receive the joy, freedom, and pleasure that result from this, it will complete your joy!
Blessings on you as you purpose in your heart to understand that your true identity comes from your relationship with God.
