Welcome! This month we will be talking about what makes a healthy family.
The scriptural model of family has its roots in God’s command to Adam and Eve in Genesis the second chapter. Here, God declares a man will leave his father and mother (his birth family) to join his wife in a marriage union, creating another family.
It is the oldest social institution in existence, sometimes referred to as the basic cell of human social structure. Like a human body, society as a whole is healthy when the individual cells are healthy.
Throughout Scripture, we see this family pattern continuing. Sometimes the term family refers to the nuclear family of husband, wife, and their dependent children. Sometimes it refers to the extended family, including grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, and cousins. The biblical model of family has been the traditional model for many cultures throughout history.
Family relationships provide an important metaphor throughout Scripture. When Jesus began teaching about human relationship to deity, He described it as that of a son to a father.
He taught His disciples to address God as “Father” when praying. In writing to the Ephesian church, Paul compares the relationship of Christ to the Church with that of a husband and wife.
He uses another family metaphor when he addresses Timothy as his “son in the faith”. A healthy view of family relationships strengthens our understanding of these scriptural metaphors.
Book three of our Unlimited!...Bible Studies for Today’s Pentecostal Woman is dedicated to healthy relationships. As a Christian woman you have the power of divine grace and perfect love. Pray that God will help you reflect those gifts especially to your family.
