Be My Refuge, Lord

Author: Bob and Emilie Barnes
Publisher: Harvest House, 2007

Reviewed by Elizabeth Hightower

In their latest book, author Emilie Barnes and her husband Bob encourage readers to turn to the Psalms to find inspiration and comfort. Their insightful devotions overflow with hope and honesty, offering a fresh perspective on the “hymnal of the Jewish people.”

“Our desire is for this book to be an inspiration when you are downtrodden, stressed, depressed, ill, discouraged or feeling like you are at the bottom of a pit,” they write in their introduction. “The Psalms stimulate a common response in people because we all share in difficult times. The experiences might be different in cause or nature, but the struggles and the doubts are similar. As we pass through these valleys and feel an even greater need to turn to the strength of the Lord and the power of His Word, we can relate to the emotions, longings, please and praises discovered in Psalms.”

Each devotional includes a prayer, call to action and words of wisdom from famous writers about subjects like slowing down, walking with integrity, learning to wait and living with peace. No matter the circumstances of your life and walk with God, you’re sure to find direction and encouragement in this excellent devotional.
